Let’s Begin and Make a Beginning! Introducing new articles
PAM is pleased to begin publishing our opening tranche/ basket/ bouquet/ batch/ offering! From these beginnings PAM will unfold ‘in short’ and ‘at length’ through our website, a place to host textual and other matter of all sorts.
Taking a cue from PAMphlet’s namesake, we wanted to start with texts that jump into the political and cultural histories of pamphlets and print or publishing cultures. Erin Farley’s ‘On broadsides, pamphlets, and people’s printing’ takes us through temporal spins from a distinctly Dundonian vantage. Cicely Farrer shares insights on three pamphlets on art and peace from the 20th century, Kirsty Hendry’s ‘Topical: Tabloids and Supplements (Dose 1 of 2)’ brings us back to the tabloid’s origins in medicine, and Katharine Barrington fills us in on Atlas Arts’ Making Publics Press.
Responses from Timothea Armour on Counterflows and Marguerite Carson on Kirsty Dunlop’s new novella, join poetic replies by Lydia Morrow and Khadea Santi on DCA’s ‘We Contain Multitudes’ exhibition. Alongside this we share a politically present piece from Emma Balkind on Glasgow’s recent closures and cultural precarity at large in Scotland.
Unseen writings emerge, as in Shona MacNaughton’s ‘postscores’, and in Calvin Z Laing’s new performance to camera ‘Calvin & Breathing’, screening with us until 24 August. Maya Upall and Susannah Bolton’s critical prose take us through memory, archive and access.
These articles will unfold over the coming days, and will be joined as we go by many more which we hope PAM can become a place for.
